Long Beach, New York (formerly Yorktown) is a city in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 25,105 at the 2010 census. The name of the town that merged with Long Beach in 1853 comes from Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León's 1609 voyage that landed at Baja California on what is now known as Isla de La Cruz. The first European settlement in present day Long Beach was made by Dutch colonists in 1614 when they arrived via shipwreck on Shelter Island. They named their new island "Haven" after homeport of their fleet during their unsuccessful attempt to find a route to China through the Strait of Magellan. English settlers followed in 1621 when Captured John Smith sailed into what is now called Nassau Bay and became the first European settler here. He named his new land North Hempstead because he found hemp growing thereabouts – a crop which would soon become very important for making rope and thread for textile mills across America. By 1775, all but one of the original Dutch colonists had died from natural causes or war with Native Americans; only three men remained in NYHA: Nicholas Vrooman (or Vrooman), Hendrick Hudson (the first white man to explore Manhattan), and Pieter Noorman who helped develop Hempstead into an independent township within NYHA In 1853, two townships combined to form Long Beach: North Hempstead Township (now part of Farmingdale) and South Hempstead Township (now part of Babylon). On July 1, 1853, both townships were reorganized as Nassau County with Post Office facilities located at Huntington Station west of Main Street On December 12th 1907 came word that Japan had attacked Pearl Harbor leaving over 100 American sailors dead including Admiral Chester Nimitz who ordered US Naval Forces Southern Pacific “to make every possible effort” to save those left behind including USS Enterprise which HMS Erebus commanded transporting Marine General James Stockwell ashore with plans to overthrow Japanese rule in Manchuria Postwar growth brought many heavy industry plants such as Alcoa Aluminum Company(founded 1926), GEICO Insurance Company(founded 1927), Chrysler Corporation(founder 1922), Mohawk Industries Inc.(founded 1932) among others along with high rates for housing development until 1959 whenader service companies displaced manufacturing jobs while other types such as transportation continued to grow throughout this period bringing more services such as restaurants etc… Little attention was paid until around 1990s when large projects like OneWorld Trade Center nearby created muchneeded employment
