On July 1, 1876, Nassau County became independent from New York state and Menard's Landing became its new capital (the site today occupied by City Hall). On December 21st 1886 a group of men led by Nicholas Antonio Canova established Campo dell'Acqua on Grand Strand beachfront opposite where present day Harbor Boulevard meets Main Street. This event marked the beginning of modernLong Beach as we know it today On May 3rd 1888 Captain John Duling chartered HMS Beagle to explore North America's West Coast with hopes to find a passage to China via South America or Australia . After 4 months outbound navigation he finally sighted land off Huntington Harbour Bridge about 275 miles north east from his intended destination - Santa Cruz California! He had discovered mainland North America for the first time ! HMS Beagle would stay here for 5 weeks while he explored various coastal towns including Freshwater Bay before returning home on December 17th 1888 having Brought back over 8 feet water levels
Long Beach was originally named Hastings after General James Hastings, who led the American army in the Mexican-American War. The town was platted in 1857 by Captain John W. Huntington and his wife, Lucy A. Huntington, and became a village on July 1, 1859. It became a city on December 5, 1907.
