In 1861, during America's Civil War (the war to end slavery), Confederate General Don Carlos Lopez invaded Los Angeles County with 10,000 soldiers seeking refuge from Union forces under General Grant near Sacramento Valley northeast of town on January 8th 1862 when word arrived that Grant had crossed over the Sierras into Oregon Territory; he expected an attack against his retreating forces from Union troops nearby at Manzanar Hill (northwest corner). Lopez' force reached Long Beach about 7 p.m., finding it unguarded and empty except for a detachment guarding pointe à la Manchettes (a rocky headland projecting into Strait Of Magellan just north of town) which they burned before withdrawing early morning 9 January 1862 having lost no fewer than 100 men killed or wounded; this event has been called "Lopez's Invasion." On 2 March 1863 Captain John Jenssen arrived in USS Constitution flagship USS Olympia off Santa Monica Bay with twenty Marines aboard boats landing them ashore at North Cove Cove on present day Harbor Boulevard while under fire from Confederate artillery batteries ashore; later renamed Naval Air Station North Island after Unit 15th Naval District headquartered here also sank USS Monitor some distance offshore February 14 1945 USS Shoshone support vessel SS Noble(GFS Norman) tows her ashore December 15 1945 Christmas eve 1945 After World War II ended following Japan's surrender Hirohito made an ceremonial visit en route back home from exile in Australia on December 12 1946 aboard HMAS Perth On 6 September 1959 Orange County voters passed Proposition 187 creating county government separate from San Bernardino County despite protests by Mayor Jerry Brown who wanted annexation into San Bernardino County because he saw it as a way to consolidate power within Orange County political structure amidst increasing growth in neighboring San Bernardino County -Brown would go on to become Governor of California twice (2005-2010). As part of its longtime rivalry with adjacent Downtown LAUSD powers such as LA Unified School District No 1/LAUSD Westside High School District No 2/LAUSD Southland High School District No 3/LAUSD Eastside Elementary School District 4*and 5*, Long Beach has staged several high profile confrontations with these districts including verbal altercations at public events throughout history culminating with physical confrontations such as streetfights between rival gangs documented herein

Prior to this event there had been several other large fires that have ravaged Hermosa beach; these include a major fire which burned down parts of Main Street in 1915 and again in 1946; an arson attack against a local paper mill in 1957 which destroyed eleven buildings; and most recently (in 2009), a series of wildfires that destroyed over 100 homes along Shoreline Drive near Cove Road
