In 1876, Captain Augustus Cole's successor as captain of "Albatross", John J. Doolittle, brought over a new engine from England that allowed for faster sailing across waters that had formerly been difficult to navigate. This new engine made it possible for "Albatross" toerville numerous raids against Indian villages along the Nassau River. In 1887, while exploring Flores Island in what is now Puerto Rico, Doolittle discovered an ancient volcano and decided to explore it further by boat. He named the island Isla de la Tortuga because of its resemblance to a tortoise shell. In 1875, a group of Englishmen from East Hampton purchased a small piece of land north of present-day North Ave and Ocean Blvd., which they named "Thousand Islands". They developmentally renamed it Long Beach after their ship the SS Thousand Islands had been lost at sea while sailing between New York City and Kingston, Jamaica. In 1907, the town of Babylon (now part of Garden City) was founded to the east by farmers who bought land around Babylon Creek. The name Burr Ridge was chosen for its location near Burr Hill on Staten Island. In 1928, a group of Japanese American citizens living in Manhasset voted to move to Long Beach because they felt segregation would be impossible living nearby Nassau's white majority. The town's first Mayor was Isamu Shimizu. In 1934–35, when Long Beach annexed neighboring Garden City—the only annexation ever made by Long Beach—the mayor decided that there would be no need for a second municipal building as Garden City functioned as its own separate municipality with its own police force and fire department. The Great Depression deeply affected this section of western New York during World War II when people found themselves without jobs or income possibilities; many fled into poverty or used crime to make ends meet During the war years however some businesses opened up such as Checkers Machinery which produced munitions for use during the war
