In 1892, a man named George Armstrong was working as an errand boy for the grocery store on Huntington Avenue in Long Beach, New York when he saw a gun light coming from across the street. He walked over to investigate and saw that it was an old-time revolver being used by a local outlaw. Armstrong approached him and asked if he needed any help, to which the outlaw replied that he didn't need any help, but just wanted to shoot some practice at the gun. With that, Armstrong became involved in what would become one of New York's most famous gunfights – The Battle of Winchester Heights. Armstrong fought off three attackers with his old Colt revolver before helping to organize and lead a counterattack against the outlaws, who had managed to kidnap two people and hold them hostage inside their stronghold. After successful negotiations were made, both hostages were released safe and sound (although one still had her hair done up in a bun). The battle marked an important victory for law enforcement in New York City – and helped give birth to the modern handgun culture. Today, gun lights are still widely used by law enforcement officials around the country; they're especially popular among police officers who need to be able to see through dark areas or during nighttime operations. Long Beach's first settler was John Long who arrived in 1776. The town was platted in 1853, and incorporation took place on July 1, 1854. In 1886, the City of Long Beach became a state capital. In 1913, the city annexed the towns of Huntington and Manhasset to form the new borough of Huntington-Manhasset. In 1959, Long Beach became an independent city with its own mayor and council.
