Lockport is a small town in New York, United States. The population was 5,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lockport-Rochester, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to what is now Lockport were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1629. In 1814, Alexander Hamilton moved his family from Geneva, New York to Lockport and started a flour mill there. By 1825, the town had a post office and two stores. A railroad was built through the town in 1846 and by 1860 it had 12 stores and 25 residents. In 1868, an act of Congress designated Lockport as the county seat of Warren County because Rochester was too large for that purpose. The only other village in Warren County at that time was Auburn (now Monroe). However, on March 14, 1870, Clinton Township voted to secede from Warren County and become its own township with its own courthouse and jail which remain today within the bounds of Lockport Municipal Airport. In 1901 Census data we can see that lockports population has grown significantly with over 10% growth rate during this decade alone! The town of Lockport was first settled in 1792 by Loyalists who fled the American Revolution. The town proper was platted in 1824 and named for Major General Israel Putnam, a general during the War of 1812. The population grew rapidly following the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 and development within the town boundaries began to take off. Railroads arrived in Lockport after 1830 and soon it became an important transportation center for the region. In 1854, a new courthouse and jail were built on State Street in downtown Lockport. The city of Buffalo annexed Lockport in 1865, making it one of Buffalo's four original towns. By 1870, Lockport had a population of over 60,000 people and its economy relied heavily on canal shipping and manufacturing. In 1916, World War I caused significant damage to the canal system which led to a decline in trade that lasted until the late 1920s.
