In 1928, a group of businessmen formed the American Optical Company in order to manufacture and sell optical telescopes and microscopes domestically and abroad. At first, these products were sold under the banner of "Olympus" or "Bushnell." Eventually, though, American Optical became known simply as "Olympus." During World War II (1939-1945), Olympus produced some very important optics including binoculars, spotting scopes and depth perception instruments. Additionally, they manufactured military radios and radar equipment which were critical for our war effort. Lockport, N.Y., is a small town located in the Catskills region of New York State. The population was 12,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lockport-Rochester, N.Y., Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Lockport was Nicholas Putnam in 1795. In 1810, David Latham and his family moved to Lockport from Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. The Lathams became one of the most influential families in Lockport and were well known for their paper products and engineering skills; they founded one of the largest paper mills in America and are considered founding fathers of modernLockport society. In 1881, James Wiegand donated land to become what is now Main Street; it was named for him after he won a competition to name Main Street in honor of his late father who had been mayor of Rochester from 1868-1871). The town's first post office opened on Main Street on Feburary 3, 1881 (the date also appears on a plaque at the corner of South Park Avenue and Second Street). In 1893, Rotary Club founder John Giannini donated land west of First Street for a park which would eventually become Giannini Park; this donation helped make Lockport an integral community within Rochester’s metropolitan area during that time period as well as providing much-needed open space for residents and businesses near downtown Rochester. In 1934, Buffalo Bisons pitcher Bob Feller committed suicide while playing baseball at nearby Rome High School; Feller had previously starred at Niagara Falls High School where he was captain his senior year before being recruited by Buffalo as an All-American pitcher prospect out OF/3B with college eligibility remaining unsigned until then. Following Feller's death several years later there was discussion among some citizens about naming a street or avenue after him but no action ever took place until 1999 when local developer Anthony Romanoff purchased Feller's former home on Third Avenue near Clarkson University for use as a museum dedicated to him (it currently houses both an art gallery and apartments). lockportspace

On November 5, 1784, Lockport was chartered as a town in the Dutch colony of New Netherland. The first post office in town was established on December 1, 1785. The first store opened in Lockport in 1806 by Wm. Cranch and his wife Sarah. The store burned down in 1809 but was rebuilt and continued to be operated until it closed in 1868. In 1830, the Town of Lockport passed a resolution condemning slavery. In 1865, the US military burned down the town's Library building following an attack by Confederate forces during the American Civil War.
