In the early 1800s, gunsmiths in Lockport made targets from buffalo, deer, and other game. By 1825, there were three shot-gun range operators in town. The first lockport rifle club was formed in 1829. By 1850, there were fifty-four people living in town and businesses had been established to sell goods related to Shooting Sports including guns, ammunition, tools and accessories. In 1871 the Town of Lockport passed a resolution creating a board of directors for the purpose of “establishing rules for the management of Sporting Ranges open to all citizens” This is when it became known as the “Gun Club Board” . The first president was John Fenton (1851-1892). In 1892 an ordinance was passed that prohibited firing any kind of weapon at any time or place within one hundred feet of any public school built before or since 1794. Rifle clubs continued to exist until about 1925 when they were abolished by new government regulations which favored shotguns over rifles as primary firearms

The lockport Shooting Association was founded in 1907 and took its name from the Lockport Arsenal, which was located on Main Street in the town. TheArsenal produced artillery rounds, pistols, rifles and shotguns. In 1911, the association moved to a new building on Main Street and began producing target holders.

Cook's survey of 17 miles long found potential sites for mills along Buffalo Creek which he christened "Cook's Mill". However, due to financial difficulties during this time period caused by tight currency conditions at that time -lockporting began losing its importance as a commercial center as transportation became more affordable thanks to railroads developments . Another factor may have been increased competition from other frontier settlements such as Detroit Heights and Dunkirk on Michigan Avenue which had begun developing around this time . In 1830-31 Joseph Biddle founded Biddle & Co., one of Northern Indiana's most successful manufacturing companies that soon became known throughout Eastern Canada for their quality products made out of cotton twill fabric etcetera. After years of success within lockporting business district; however industry declined during Great Depression affecting everyone associated with it including families who had invested heavily in it; especially those located near riverfront like Captains Graves family home on Main Street where they sat enjoying views until their final days ; his grandson continued running store until very recently when it closed due to economic recession Although lockporting lost much importance over time due primarily to technological advancements; its downtown core remains active today containing several businesses including a new light industrial park adjacent to main shopping mall across riverFront
