It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Lockport were French explorers Jean Nicolet and Samuel de Champlain in 1614 and 1615, respectively. A grant from King George III of England in 1764 gave the town its charter as "Town of Lockport". The first courthouse was built in 1806 and it burned down in 1814. A new courthouse was built between 1829 and 1830 by contractor Elijah Dutton. The Erie Canal passed through Lockport twice before it reached Buffalo, so canal boats stopped there for supplies ( lockports are still used for this purpose). In 1825, business began with a store on Main Street that became the first incorporated business in what would become Lockport. In 1865, three sisters-Marie-Hélène Lafontaine, Victoire-Nathalie Lafontaine Bourque and Marie-Thérèse Bourque founded a convent at nearby Holy Cross Abbey to provide religious education to girls who could not or would not attend local schools. This convent closed after only one year due to lack of enrollment; however, it reopened as an all female high school called Holy Cross Preparatory School in 1893 which remains open today as Catholic High School Lockport East One major event that took place during this time was World War I when over 1 million soldiers from all over America served in Europe including manylockports themselves who had no way to return home until after the war ended In 1922 the city fathers decided that they wanted more than just a single grocery store so they started buying shares from other businesses within their community This led to two more stores being opened: Goudreau’s Market & Supermarket (now known as Goudreau’s) on Main Street and later Onondaga Grocery store on Park Avenue which remain open today . The town of Lockport, New York was founded in 1795 by Captain Samuel Thomson. It was named for Lieutenant-General Sir John Lockyer, who had commanded the British forces that invaded America in 1776. The town's first store opened in 1802. In 1811, the town voted to incorporate as a village. On October 15, 1823, the village became a town and on November 3 of that year it received its charter from the State of New York. The first mayor of Lockport was James Auld.
