Today, it is a small community located within the city limits of Niagara Falls. The first settlement in what is now Lockport was made on May 12th, 1788 by Peter Kirkpatrick and his family. The town was named after Captain John Lockwood who had died in an accident near Kingston about two years earlier. By 1812, there were only six families living in Lockport; four farmers and two mechanics. Unfortunately for the residents, this period of growth was short-lived due to several factors including disease (the area at that time lacked proper sanitation), financial challenges caused by tight currency regulations during the War of 1812 and increased competition from other towns in the region. In 1827, locksmithsWilliam Woolstonand Isaac Lapp founded Woolston & Lapplocksmiths to provide quality security locks for public buildings throughout northeastern New York City. The company grew quickly into one of the largest lockmakers in America during this period and soon became well-known throughout North America as a source for high-quality locks not only for government institutions but also for commercial properties such as stores and hotels. Lockerport was a small town in upstate New York until the early 19th century. It was located on the east side of Lockport River, about southwest of Rochester and northeast of Buffalo. The first settlers to Lockerport were farmers who arrived in 1795. They built their homes near the river and began to cultivate land. The town started to grow around 1800 when a mill was built downstream from the lock on the river. Lockerport had one school starting in 1806 and another starting in 1808. A log courthouse was erected in 1810 and served as the town's court house for many years. In 1815, Lockerport became part of Monroe County when it was created from parts of Erie and Niagara counties. In 1830, Lockerport became an independent village with its own government under a charter from Monroe County. The village had two churches - First United Methodist and Second Presbyterian - as well as a schools (Lockerport Academy from 1830-1837, Lockport Collegiate School from 1840-1847) and a post office (from 1829-1840). In 1840, Lockerport voted to become a city but this vote failed to pass by referendum due to lack of support within the village itself.
