Lockport is a village in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 5,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Lockport were traders and fur buyers from what is now Canada in the early 17th century. In 1686, Nathaniel West bought two tracts of land on the east side of Lockport Creek from the Agnew family for $2 per acre. One tract was developed as an agricultural community with dairy and meat production; another became a seaport for goods exported to Great Britain and Europe. In 1814, Captain Amos Lawrence built a wharf on Lockport Creek to service his ship "Natchez". The town began construction on Main Street (now Elmwood Avenue) in 1815 and named it after Major General Israel Putnam who served as military governor of New York during the War of 1812. The town's first store opened in 1824 and its first school in 1830. In 1840, John Atherton founded a paper mill near where Main Street meets Elmwood Avenue; this led to Lockport becoming one of Niagara County's leading paper towns. A cotton gin followed soon afterwards; however, it did not produce any large quantities until 1865 when John Condon erected an oil refinery on Long Island Sound which led to increased demand for Lockport's products both within Niagara County and afar
