Lockport is a small town in the Finger Lakes region of New York state, located about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Rochester and 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Buffalo. It was founded in 1824 by Horace Greeley, who conceived the idea for what would become the Erie Canal. The town was named for its lock on the Erie Canal. The first permanent settler in Lockport was David Aiken, who arrived in 1825. He built a cabin on the north side of present-day Main Street. Other early settlers included Rev. Stephen Haggerty, who preached at St. John's Episcopal Church from 1827 to 1830; and Drs. James Prentice and Ebenezer Porter, both physicians who served as surgeons in the United States Army during the American Revolution. In 1830, Porter opened a medical practice at 5 Front Street and became one of Lockport's leading businessmen and civic leaders. In 1835, locks were added to ensure efficient navigation on the canal system; this event is commemorated by a plaque at Main Street's entranceway today. The community rapidly grew thanks to new businesses established along Main Street: Wagon Wheel Brewery (1836), Butterfield Boot & Shoe Store (1838), Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (1841), Phelps Dodge Engine Works (1842), Appleton & Whitney grocery store (1848). During World War I, Lockport was an important munitions manufacturing center due to its location near Tonawanda Lake; it also produced munitions for use against Japanese forces during that conflict as well as supplies for allies such as America's Central Powers army during World War II. Afterward,Lockport experienced rapid growth as an agricultural community until suburban development transformed it into one of New York City's most ethnically diverse towns with concentrations of Polish-American residents, Irish Americans, Italians and Lithuanians among others over time
