In 1830, there were only three dwellings in Lockport; all were built by DeWitt and his family or their associates during the early 1800s when he began developing this area around Buffalo into what is now known as Erie County. This area would become one of the most densely populated areas in New York State due to land speculation and economic development brought about by Andrew Jackson's presidency which increased transportation costs across state lines (making goods available more cheaply to consumers). The area now known as Lockport was first settled by the Dutch in 1624. The town was named after Major-General Olivier de La Salle, who had surveyed the area for New Netherland in 1622. The first post office in Lockport was established in 1795. In 1814, the United States acquired what is now Delaware County from Great Britain. Lockport became a part of New York state in 1821 and remained so until it became a part of New York City in 1898.
