Lockport, New York is a city in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 37,871 at the 2010 census. The city is named after John Lockwood, who donated land to the town in 1824. It is one of four villages in Niagara County and home to Buffalo Bill's Ranch and Western Museum. Lockport was founded on November 21st, 1794 by Captain James Monroe and his men as an outpost on the Canadian River just beyond present-day Lockport Township. On February 1st, 1824 John Lockwood donated of land east of the village to make way for what would become Lockport. The economic center of Niagara County until the early 20th century was Buffalo Bill's Ranch and Western Museum (now known as Buffalo Bill Center) which operated from 1872-1913. The museum closed in 1913 but reopened as a research center in 2006 with additional exhibits about American history from frontier days to modern times. Today Lockport remains a thriving community with many businesses including several banks, two post offices, three churches (oneMethodist; one Presbyterian), two schools (one public & one private), three shopping centers - including one located within walking distance of all six elementary schools - three old industrial sites (two now used for housing) as well as a new light rail stop less than blocks away from most downtown businesses.
