The oldest lockport, or lock-and-chain town, was founded in 1686 by the Dutch. The town prospered because of its position on the Susquehanna River and its ability to control access to timber and other resources. In 1753, the British took over New York from the Dutch and renamed it for themselves. The town declined in popularity after that time, but it continued to be used as a teaching center for students from Pennsylvania. Lockport was destroyed by a fire in 1829, but it reemerged as an independent community later that year. It experienced another decline during the Great Depression, but it regained some popularity in the 1970s when businesses moved into the area. Today, Lockport is an active neighborhood with a variety of businesses and events happening each week.
