Lockport, NY is a town in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 9,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Erie–Kankakee– Niagara metropolitan area. Lockport is the seat of Niagara County government and also home to two public high school districts: Lockport-Fulton Central and Lockport-Hollandville. The village of East Aurora lies within the Town of Lockport. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lockport were French traders who made a landing there in 1664; they named it "Port-au-Prince" after their king's capital on the island of Haiti. In 1718, Colonel George Clinton built his lock and dam at Lake Ontario in present-day Lockport on land he had purchased from the Mohawk nation east of Buffalo. He called itClintonville after himself and his Vice President James Ketchum (1701–1785), whose son John had founded that town in 1786 as one of four original townships in Niagara County. In 1803, when New York State was created from portions of Canada, Clintonville became part ofNiagara County; but because its population included only men over 21 years old at that time, it did not receive any municipal rights or benefits until 1840 when all new municipalities were added toNiagara by an act entitled "An Act for organizing and improvingthe Township of Niagara." In 1845 Anthony Morris opened one end (north)of what would eventually become Main Street in Clintonville while William Meeker opened the other end (south)on what became Church Road today’s south side of Ithaca Road just west of US 20/Canada Route 14/Old National Highway 10 near where modern Ithaca High School stands today. In 1847 local resident Hiram Dewey built a sawmill with capacity for eighty tons per day on Mill Creek northwest of present day Main Street; this began commercial logging operations which continue to this day including sawmilling until 1942 when milling stopped due to World War II bombings along with much else during those days due to wartime restrictions on goods transported across international borders.
