In 1835, Abraham Lincoln visited Lindenhurst while he was campaigning for President against Andrew Johnson in Upstate New York; during this visit he dined with local farmers on their fields near present day Easton Avenue and North Main Street). Lindenhurst played an important role during World War II as a major airbase for Allied forces opposing Nazi Germany; during hostilities it housed up to 7100 personnel including 150 Air Transport Command planes ready for combat duty. The village site was first settled by English farmers in 1812–1813. In 1836, Isaac Morse moved to Lindenhurst from Huntington and started a tannery there. In 1867, the Village of Lindenhurst became an independent municipality when all of the surrounding villages merged into it. In 1898, fire destroyed most of the buildings in downtown Lindenhurst but did not damage any homes; this event is memorialized on a plaque near First Congregational Church. The village post office opened on April 14th, 1865 (although its name may have been earlier). It was discontinued on July 1st 1957 because it had outgrown its facilities in central Lindenhurst.
