In 1795, the first telescope was built in Lindenhurst, New York. It was a three-foot-diameter instrument with a viewing angle of sixty degrees. The telescope was used by Professor George Washington to study the sky. In 1814, the first Lowell Observatory was founded in Boston, Massachusetts. It became the world's first observatory dedicated to astrophysics and space exploration. The observatory purchased two large telescopes called English Hogsback and American Organ at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona in 1922. These telescopes were used for research on stars and planets. In 1937, the Nyanza Valley Observatory was founded in Nyanza Province, Zambia by Drs Robert FitzRoy and Donald Halloran with support from King Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia. By 1948, all observational astronomy had been moved to Mount Wilson near Tucson, Arizona where it is still conducted today as part of the United States National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO).

The first European settlers in what is now Lindenhurst were Dutch colonists who founded a trading post there in 1664. It was named for Johannes van der Linde, an officer of the Dutch East India Company who had died during one of his trips to America in 1624. The town began as a small farming community and quickly grew into a major center for trade and commerce on the southern border of New York City. In 1812, when Fort George Wright was built on Long Island to protect Albany against French attack, Lindenhurst became one of the few towns in New York City with military protection. The town continued to grow until it surpassed Yonkers as the largest municipality within New York after incorporation by Act of Legislature on February 17, 1911. The original village that developed around the trading post located near present-day Newtonia became known as "Lindenhurst", while "Newtonia" became "Yonkers". Both villages were incorporated into Lindenhurst by Acts of Legislature on February 17, 1911 (14th anniversary of Town's incorporation) following annexation by Yonkers from other municipalities within Westchester County then and now including White Plains and Valhalla (now Rosendale). In 1916-1917 five new wards were erected within Lindenhurst; these are Butterfield Park/East Northport/Leadville/Newtonia and parts of Villa Park and Glen Rock which later merged into single ward form called Broadway/Enderlin Heights/Hudson Valley Falls#Creekview Heights renamed Highland Falls before finally merging back into individual ward form called Broadway/Enderlin Heights#Hillcrest Crest renamed Crossroads before finally merging back into individual ward form called Broadway#Crossroads

The name "Lindenhurst" probably derives from the Dutch word linden which means 'alder tree'. The first settlers in what is now Lindenhurst were farmers and their families who arrived around 1795. They built a log cabin on the east side of present-day Maple Street. It was here that John Morse met his future wife in 1796 when she walked to his farm to buy milk for her family's cow. In 1827, Elijah White made a Donation of Land for School District #1 which became known as Whitehall Township and still has its own school district today. In 1846, Charles Beecher donated land to build Chapel Hill Academy which later became Columbia University. In 1851, Henry Fenton donated land to build Agriculture High School which would eventually become Cornell University and then America's first agricultural college, State College of New York (now SUNY). In 1901, the town erected a memorial tablet to these benefactors at their home on Maple Street - one of only three such tablets remaining in New York City today (the others are those honoring Alice Paul and Martin Luther King Jr.). Blessed by President Franklin D Roosevelt in 1943 for his work with youth programs throughout Manhattan during World War II, Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt dedicated Lindenhurst High School's new gymnasium following her death there six years earlier at age 95 on October 14th 1944 - making her only U.S.? president also buried there! Today Lindenhurst is an idyllic small town with close-knit community spirit that continues strong thanks to its many volunteer organizations including: Chamber of Commerce; Lions Club; Knights Templar; American Legion; Irish Republican Brotherhood; Moose Lodge No 4795; Saint Vincent de Paul Society; Good Shepherd Catholic Church
