In 1814, Peter Loeb founded the village of Loebstown to the north of Lindenhurst along the Genesee River because he could not find a place to put his grain elevator. The first post office was established at Loebstown in 1818; it continued to be called Loebstown until its closure in 1865. Lindenhurst became a town on January 1, 1860, when it merged with Oneonta and other villages into what is now Rochester metropolitan area. The current town hall was built in 1912 and has been used as an election polling place since 1917. The community library opened for business on Main Street in 1966 and has remained open ever since.

The hamlet of Lindenhurst, New York was founded in 1795 by Nicholas Lindenheimer. The town was named after his father, Johann Christoph Lindenheimer. It became a part of the City of New York in 1898.
