The town was named for Captain John Linden (1681-1759), an Englishman who became a Revolutionary War general and member of the First Continental Congress. A post office called "Lindenhurst" was established in 1812, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1872. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 6,927 people, 2,953 households, and 1,814 families residing in the town. The population density was 468.6 people per square mile (190.0/km²). There were 3,093 housing units at an average density of 194.4 per square mile (74.5/km²).
