The Village of Lindenhurst was incorporated in 1868 and had a population of 375 as of the 2000 census. The first settler in this area was Lewis Hine who arrived about 1785. He built the first house on what is now Main Street in what is today Lindenhurst. There were several other early settlers including Isaac Anthony who settled here around 1800 and Captain John Smith who came to reside here in 1823 In 1868, the original village of Lindenhurst was incorporated with a population of 375 people The name originated from two Dutch words "Linden" meaning 'a forest' and "hurtig" meaning 'quick'. The new town had been named after Colonel Augustus Herkimer (1796-1872) an American Revolutionary War veteran and business man from Albany, New York who served as Lieutenant Colonel on the staff of General Howe during his victory at Saratoga Springs on October 17, 1814 In 1922, when Rockland County became an unified county under one government system with a single sheriff, groceries began being delivered to residents by horse and wagon rather than by car or truck because there was no public transportation available then In 1984-1985 three buildings located on Main Street between Govan Road and Webster Avenue were completely destroyed by fire which caused extensive damage to both structures . This event led to increased community activism towards improving fire safety within the village In 1990-1991 four more buildings located on Main Street between Govan Road and Webster Avenue were also destroyed by fire but these structures only sustained minor damage due to their location close to homes rather than being fully destroyed

Lindenhurst is a small town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. Lindenhurst is located east of Hempstead and west of Glens Falls on the southern banks of the Schuylkill River. The first settlers in what is now Lindenhurst were Swedish immigrants who arrived in 1784. They named their new land "Nassau". In 1814, a group of Dutch farmers moved to Lindenhurst and started farming potatoes. The first school was opened in 1815. A post office was established at Lindenhurst in 1827 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. In 1830, a store was built on Main Street and became the nucleus for what would become the present day town center. In 1872, an Italian immigrant named Antonio Giannini donated land to build a church on East Main Street. The cornerstone for the church was laid on December 8th of that year by Bishop George Cushing of Philadelphia with Reverend John Fenton serving as celebrant. The new church served as the parish seat until 1886 when it moved to its current location on North Grove Avenue. Lindenhurst has had several mayors over its history including: Josephine Baker (1924-25), Harry Bridges (1945-46), Earl Warren (1959-1960), Nelson Rockefeller (1968-1970), Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Board member John Pappas (1973-1975) and Gerald Ford Presidential Library Board member James Meehan (1981-1982). A post office called Lindenhurst had been established in 1827 but it closed down due to lack of customers in 1840. It reopened under new management under President James Ketchum with letters being sent from Brooklyn via horseback riders until 1862 when railroad service began providing transportation directly to Albany through Utica allowing for increased shipping traffic which necessitated a second post office at Lindenhhurst which remained open until 1865 when it also closed down due to lack of customers despite repeated applications from owners/ occupants thereof! Mayor Angelo Rossi announced plans for construction of a new high school District #2 within 3 miles (5 km) radiusof Lindenhusrtught after consultation with Parents Association members who raised objections thereto; this project proceeded apace and resulted n building Of Our Lady de la Salette High School ON THE SAME DAY AS LINDENHURST'S PROPOSED NEW HAGERTY HIGH SCHOOL! This program has ultimately paid off handsomely as today's students are able to conveniently attend both schools without having undue logistical disruption - something we could not possible achieve if our proposed plan never got off the ground
