Lindenhurst is a town located in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 6,324 as of the 2010 census. It lies at the southern end of the Finger Lakes region and east of White Plains. Lindenhurst is bordered to the south by Sleepy Hollow and to the north by Hempstead. In 1860, Lindenhurst became part of the newly formed Village of Ronkonkoma when that community was organized along agricultural lines; it remained so until 1971 when it joined the Town of Hempstead in that sameyearly consolidation process which also included Ronkonkoma. In 1973, Ronkonkoma united with Larchmont to form Oneonta within one year's time following passage by local voters of an ordinance increasing their combined population from 2,000 to 4,000 persons without having to go through another municipal election; thusforth Oneonta would be considered an independent municipality within Lindenhurst proper despite its nominal independence from Ronkonkoma.
