The name has been changed several times since then, but it has always stood for a center of Dutch culture and commerce in the area. In 1824, a group of Englishmen started trading with the Indians near Lindenhurst. This development led to increased trade and commerce in the town and helped make it an important center for artisans and traders. In 1836, Mayor John Geddes set up a school system within the town limits which became one of the most successful in New York State. The town also developed a manufacturing industry which included tanning and dyeing products as well as boots, shoes, wagon wheels and other items. Lindenhurst was incorporated as a village on February 14, 1885 by order of Governor George Mifflin through an act of legislature; it was renamed "Hillsdale" on July 3 that year when Hillsdale Manor were annexed into Lindenhurst Village. On November 15th 1916 Hillsdale Village lost its charter due to lack of support from residents; however it regained its charter on December 12th 1922 under new leadership including Elihu Root Jr., who served until his death in 1929). In 1939 Hillsdale Village merged with neighboring White Plains to form what is now called Lindenhurst-White Plains City (LWHP). A campaign initiated by LWHP Mayor Edward J Malone resulted in incorporation of neighboring East Riverboro into LWHP on January 1st 1945 effective at that time there were over 1,000 people living within LWHP boundaries alone! The post office at Lindenhurst was established on October 20th 1825; after being closed twice due to fire (the first time being during Indian War) it reopened on December 5th 1830 following consolidation of two earlier mailrooms serving both villages: Hillside (1827) and Woolwich (1828). After more than 50 years service local citizens voted to close its doors Effective January 1st 1955 because they no longer felt confident usingmail services provided by what had become known as 'Rochester Post Office'. Today, Lindenhurst is a vibrant and thriving community that occupies a key location in the town. Lindenhurst was first settled by Dutch colonists in 1664. The town name originated from an observation by Captain John Smith while exploring the area: "The whole night we saw no houses but what were built out of cornstalks." By 1814, Lindenhurst had grown to include over 100 residents. In 1825, the village was renamed after Major General Nicholas Biddle (1787-1868), who served as governor of New York State from 1824 to 1830 and as CommandantGeneral of Police for Albany County. During its heyday as a small agricultural community, Lindenhurst boasted some impressive architecture. One such landmark was the Congregational Church which stood on Washington Avenue between Elm and Clinton Streets for over 250 years until it was destroyed in 1938 by fire. Another prominent structure from this time period was the old schoolhouse which still stands today on Main Street near where it once housed classrooms and other educational institutions. A number of other notable buildings also came down during this time including the post office (founded in 1827) and two churches – one erected around 1840 and another built in 1865 – both now gone but their associated acreage remains intact. Lindenhurst's day-to-day operations continued unchanged for many years after its incorporation into Town Hall on Valentine's Day, 1870; however, certain aspects of daily life did undergo change with respect to governance when Town Manager George Hennepin assumed control following Mayor James Phelan's death two years earlier. Initially under Hennepin's leadership, efforts were made to modernize Village Affairs including creation of a library (1871), fire department (1875), constable service (1876), roads/bridges (1878), marketplace (1903), waterworks (1911), cemetery (1914) and more importantly development within Town limits through erection or addition of buildings such as meetinghouses, schools - both private and public - libraries etcetera throughout much of what is now known as Northside Township.. Although there have been several changesover decades since then due largely to population growth - most notably attributable to agriculture - Lindenhurst has remained an important partof Upstate new York history withstood test times both literally AND figuratively Throughout much thereof!
