Lindenhurst is a small town in New York State, located on the eastern side of Kingston Hill. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Lindenhurst is part of the Utica-Rome, NY Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Lindenhurst were Dutch colonists in 1624 who founded a farmstead called "Wakefield". The name derived from a nearby body of water that they discovered when sailing down the Hudson River. In 1736, George Washington and his retinue passed through this area on their way to West Point and decided to stay overnight at the farmstead of Tryon (now known as North Tryon). Some time later, General James Wolfe's army moved through this area during its winter encampment near Kingston Hill. In 1778, Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene stayed at Tryon for three months while he built his headquarters near present day Woolwich village. In 1812, Colonel Nathaniel Hawthorne purchased land east of the village and named it Hawthorne Heights after his father-in-law Major John Atherton Hawthorne. In 1822, General John Pope attacked Fort Niagara while surveyors were mapping out boundaries for modern-day Erie County. The fortifications were destroyed and much of what remains today is due to artillery fire from that night which killed many local residents including Reverend Amos Kendall Bulkley and Chief Justice John Marshall William Bickerton; both are buried in Lindenhurst Cemetery Extension #2 next to Dr Samuel Fenton Jr.. For years thereafter there was debate as to where exactly Patriot cannonballs impacted upon Fort Niagara - some say within feet of where Rev Bulkley died or even closer! Finally in 1886 an exploratory team led by Alfred Nobel found coal seams beneath what is now town green with plans to develop it into an agricultural center but noiuht happened until 1903 when a new steam engine power plant was built just east of town limits - creating what are now two active churches – First Presbyterian Church (1896) and Second Presbyterian Church (1903). It wasn't until 1892 when railroad tracks were laid through town limits connecting Utica with Rome via Kingston Hill that businesses began opening up aroundhere – most notably Mr & Mrs Wohlgemuths department store which still operates today adjacent to First Presbyterian Church across Main Street from post office annexe No. 2 on High Street serving all surrounding villages with groceries and various other sundries since 1915 when mail service ended between here and Rome following World War I; trucking became available beginning in 1923 providing convenience for farmers markets farther away within commuting distance beginning in 1926 followed by Route 5 bringing shopping malls closer each year until reaching Rome starting 1986 just south of Post Office Annexe No. 1 across Main Street from Lumberjacks Restaurant/Gas Station operating since 1907 also providing convenient access for more than 20 familyowned gas stations across southern Kingsland County including such places as: Honeysuckle Hollow Farms Dairy Store (1910), Maple Leaf Farms Market Grocery store (1920), Sawmill Creek Farm Outfitters Warehouse(1930), Cornfields Hardware & Meat Market(1964), Centralia Mall Shopping Center(1976), Eastern Townships Plaza Shopping mall(1990)….. finally closed Jan 1st 1999 after over 60 Years business presence herein………. Today only one familyowned business still extant locally left open inside originaltown limits these being: Genshaw's Drugs Inc., operated since 1918 inside originalVillage Hall building opposite post office annexe………. All other businesses have either closed or relocated outside city limits concurrent with changing social landscape within old Village boundary….. This paper will attempt answer several questions about Lindenhurst including: who lived here before1900?, how did natives feel about outsiders coming into their community?, has anything changed significantly regarding demographics/location over recent decades? What role did tourism play? Lastly it will provide an overview of current development opportunities within the confines of old Village boundaries…..

In 1848, General David Hunter burned down part of Randolph's house to prevent its use as a garrison Inn by the British Army during their occupation of New York City. The ruins still remain today adjacent to Route 9 south of Interstate 95 in Lindenhurst Township (now part of Westchester County). During World War II, Lindenhurst served as an airfield for the XII Bomber Command RAF. After the war ended in 1945, many families left town and new development began including shopping malls and housing developments around present day Lindenhurst Boulevard and Interstate 95 north-south corridor. Today a few old homes remain near I-95 while most development has moved away from town towards newer suburbs such as White Plains and Yonkers
