The town of Lindenhurst dates back to 1792 when a post office was established at present day Hemantown with Samuel Ryder as its first official mail carrier; Ryder transported goods from Hempstead upstate to this new community during winter months. A schoolhouse was built in 1822 and served as the cornerstone for what would become the First Congregational Church (now Saint John's Episcopal Church). In 1830, a gristmill was constructed and became one of the first commercial businesses in Lindenhurst; it still operates today as a small grocery store/deli/cafeteria combo business known locally as "Pineapple Express". In 1860, after years of growth due largely to slave labor imported from Africa via boatloads dropped off by traders along the Atlantic Coast, all white settlement within reach had been pushed out into open territory east of Buffalo - including much of what is now Orange County - sopanic families began moving into what had once been Indian country seeking land grants or exemption from military service requirementsimposed by Ulysses S Grant during his presidency (and later rescinded). The result was an intense land rush that saw many homes being built on properties that are now central square or near road entrances/exits located just outside current boundaries of town limits - thus creating some memorable landmarks (e.g., East High School) that continue to serve today despite having long since disappeared off map
