Lindenhurst is a town in Putnam County, New York, United States. The population was 2,865 at the 2010 census. Lindenhurst was founded as a sod farm by Revolutionary War veterans in 1775. It developed into an agricultural community with a post office and general store in 1811. In 1825, the town became the seat of Putnam County. The townspeople built their first frame house on the corner of Main and Centre Streets in 1828. That year, they also erected a two-story building used as a schoolhouse and court House. In 1830, they built a three-story stone schoolhouse which still stands today. The first optical instruments were made here in 1832 by David Levy of Norwich, Connecticut who manufactured eyeglasses for American soldiers during the Mexican–American War. In 1865, Isaac Sutter opened his own optical business on Main Street which would become known as Sutter's Optical Shop until it closed in 1967 due to competition from Sears Roebuck & Co.'s new store nearby on Elm Street. In 1898, Harry Weldon bought Sutter's Optical Shop and continued to operate it until its closure in 1984; he is credited with creating the modern optical industry. In 1924, Lindenhurst voted to become part of the newly created Towns of Putnam and Westchester counties; it remained an unincorporated village until 1951 when it became part of Lindenhurst Township (renamed Westchester County). The town lost its elementary school district affiliation with New York State after voters rejected annexation by Valhalla High School District #1 in 1974; however Valhalla has since rejoined that district.]] According to the 2000 US Census there were 2,865 people living within Lindenhurst borders - this makes it one of only five towns situated completely within another municipality (the others being Jericho Beach Borough (New York), Rye Brook Borough (New York), Sayville Municipal District (Nassau County), Farmingdale Townecounty (NY) and White Plains Municipal District (NY)) without any form of reciprocity ortransferral between those municipalities.]] Some residents have argued that this unique situation could be explained by the fact that many businesses located within municipalities are familyowned - meaning that not all residents have strong ties to either municipality]]

Lindenhurst is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 7,577 at the 2010 census. Lindenhurst is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. The first settlers in what is now Lindenhurst were Dutch immigrants who arrived there in 1657 and built a farmstead on the present-day site of the town. In 1786, when Westchester County was created from parts of two previous counties, Lindenhurst became one of its first towns. The first post office was established in 1802. Lindenhurst has been noted for its pioneer architecture—including severalrespectable homes dating to the early 19th century—and for its large amount of forest land which has been used for grazing and agricultural purposes ever since. In 1836, as a result of an act of Congress known as the "Population Act," all lands west of Clifton Park within 1/2 mile (0.8 km) of any family home were opened to settlement by free people under the supervision and control of a board composedof twenty-four members appointed by President Andrew Johnson; this provision served as an incentive to families to move into these new areas. In 1847, David Hume Boothe founded what would become Northside Land Company Limited and began buying up land east of Clifton Park for development into large tracts that are still integral to Lindenhurst today; this effort led to what is now known as Boothe Square area south of Route 8 between Middle Rd./Route 9 and Wellesley Ave./Route 10A). As more families moved into Lindenhurst during the late 19th century, stone churches and other classical Revival styled buildings began becoming common throughout much rural western NY; this trend continued through much later years until World War II brought about major changes with respect to zoning laws which resulted in increased numbers density along urban corridors while smaller lots surrounding more traditional rural neighborhoods became increasingly rarer over time. Today's community culture has developed largely around baseball (baseball being one sport that many residents participate in), dancing (especially ballroom dance), golfing (particularly links golf), walking/running/jogging, horseback riding and shopping at local farmers markets or large retailers like Walmart or Target

The population Plattsburgh Rural School District No. 2 has since been abolished within the Lindenhurst Village limits but the name still survives as a place name used for businesses within those boundaries such as "Hilton" hotel near Main Street that opened in 1905
