Lindenhurst is a borough in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 12,521 at the 2010 census. Lindenhurst is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. In 1776, General George Washington and his army invaded Long Island from Manhattan and ordered Hessian mercenaries to burn down the town of Hempstead because he felt they were too cowardly to fight against British forces. The town's founder, Nicholas Myron Woodhull, took to the hills after seeing how short-handed Washington's army was and built a fortified settlement which he named for himself – Lindenhurst (meaning "old fort"). Lindenhurst experienced its heyday during the early 1800s as an agricultural center with large plantations such as those of Aaron Burr and John Randolph. However, by 1870 Lindenhurst had become one of the most industrialized areas in New York State due to its location on Route 9A between Buffalo and Yonkers. The lack of major railways led to many manufacturing jobs moving out of Lindenhurst during the late 19th century; however, this has reversed over time as much new manufacturing has moved into the borough since then thanks to its proximity to key metropolitan areas such as New York City and Buffalo. In recent years Lindenhurst has seen a rise in crime rates due to an increase in drug trafficking along routes 9A and 151; however, law enforcement efforts have been stepped up in recent years with help from local police departments across Westchester County. Although some residents may feel that crime levels are high enough without all these extra security measures put in place, overall Lindenhhurst remains a safe community with plenty of opportunities for social interaction despite some occasional issues.

Lindenhurst is a village in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 1,584 at the 2010 census. Lindenhurst is part of the Greater New York City area. The first settlers were Dutchmen who arrived in 1624 and erected a small cabin on the east side of what is now Main Street. They named their community 'New Amsterdam' after the city of Amsterdam in Holland. In 1764, General George Washington visited the town and spent his night at the original cabin where he was treated to dinner by its namesake and current mayor, Nicholas Lindenburgh. In 1802-03, when builders began work on an Erie Canal through central Nassau County, they laid out a road from this village to White Plains Junction (now Westbury), about six miles away. This road became known as Main Street because it ran through all of Lindenhurst until it reached White Plains Junction; thereafter it followed what is now Route 11 north to Farmingdale before turning east to reach Scarsdale. The canal company built two more sidings here: one leading to Canandaigua and another leading to Utica (now Albany). The final connection between these two towns was made in 1825 when Orange Avenue was constructed following an alignment that had been used by Indian traders for centuries before that date. The first post office at Lindenhurst opened in 1826; its name changed several times over the years until1879 when it became Wendell Willkie's Post Office (). Some residents still refer to themselves as "old timers" or "landlady people". A school district was formed in 1895 from parts of three previous villages: Griggsville (later called Onondaga), East Meadow (later renamed Ossining) and Norwich (later renamed South Nyack). In 1915-16, most of Long Valley School District No. 301 merged into this new district; however some students continued attending Norwich Elementary School which served as a merger spot for both schools until 1922 when South Nyack Elementary School moved into its own building on North Main Street while East Meadow Elementary School became part of Long Valley School District No., 302 . By 1930-31 only Griggsville remained within the old school district boundaries with most villagers switching allegiance to Long Valley School District #301 (). When Long Valley Schools closed down during World War II many former pupils transferred them across municipal lines back into our old school system but today there are no remnants left except for those elementary students attending North Nyack Jr./Sr Highschool which I visit each year

The first post office in Lindenhurst was established on December 12, 1836, by Order of President James K. Polk. The present post office building was built in 1896. Lindenhurst's rich history can be found in its many places such as the Lindenhurst Cemetery (established in 1845), the Lindenhurst School (1870-1909), and theLindenhurst Methodist Episcopal Church (1892).
