Lindenhurst is located on Long Island about east of the City of New York and west of Jamesville-on-the-Lake. The first permanent settler in what is now Lindenhurst was Nicholas Block who arrived with his family in 1785 from Farmington Connecticut. He erected a log cabin on the south side of present day Main Street in 1787. For many years it served as the home for Dr. John Livingston (1749–1825), one of the earliest physicians practicing in Nassau County and also a leading figure in early American education and culture. A post office called Lindenhurst was established at this location on December 12, 1814, by Samuel Blanchard. The name was changed to Lindenhurst after Captain John Ladd (1800–1871) explored and mapped much of Long Island during his 1820 survey which became known as "The Ladd Report". In 1824 Cornelius Vanderbilt bought some land northwest of present day Lindenhurst from Nicholas Block and began to build what would become one of America's largest cotton plantations - Raritan Bay Cotton plantation - eventually reaching its peak production in 1865 when more than 20 million pounds (10 million kg) of cotton were produced there alone! In 1863 General George Armstrong Custer reported that he had killed 6 Sioux Indians nearpresent day Lindenhurst while hunting buffalo; this event remains oneof America's most famous Native American massacres! They named their new settlement after Hendrick van der Linden, a friend and ally of Amsterdam who had helped lead them to success as traders and colonists on Long Island. In 1785, the area around Lindenhurst was included within the newly created town of Oneida. The name Oneida originated from an Iroquois word meaning "place where trees grow." The townsfolk of Lindenhurst fought hard against annexation by Buffalo, New York in 1853 because they wanted their own village center and school district. However, when Buffalo withdrew its offer two years later the residents ofLindenhurst followed suit and formed their own municipality with the same name but without any landOWNED by Buffalo; this became known as "Binghamton". Lindenhurst's unique history began on October 20th 1880 when a group of nine farmers led by Lemuel Gorham registered with the post office at 2 Front Street as "Newburgh", Incorporated under the laws of New York state on that date. This company operated a store and stagecoach stop between Binghamton and Schenectady through much ofNY State until 1897 (when it closed down due to lack of business). The Gorams were among the original incorporators of one-time northeastern NY's most important community - today considered one of its most historical neighborhoods!
Lindenhurst was founded by Peter Lindenhurst in 1786. The village became a part of the larger town of Westchester in 1801. Lindenhurst experienced rapid growth during the 19th century, thanks to its location on the southern border of New York State and its access to water resources. The population reached 9,000 by 1860, and more than 20,000 by 1900. In 1935, Lindenhurst was annexed into the larger city of White Plains.
