Lindenhurst is a town in Westchester County, New York, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. Lindenhurst is part of the New York City Metropolitan Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Lindenhurst were Dutch settlers who arrived in 1624 and named it "Willemstadt". In 1664, Englishman John Winthrop landed there on his Supply Ship "Mayflower" and soon after built a small estate called Middleton House on the south side of the creek that flows through town. The house was later confiscated by the British government and used as a prison for Americans during the Revolutionary War. In 1793, James Fenton boughtMiddleton House from the British government and renamed it "Lindenhurst". He continued to use it as his home until his death in 1857. Fenton's son-in-law, Elijah Denison purchased Middleton House again in 1859 and continued to use it until his death in 1913. His wife Sarah Payson Denison also owned Middleton House from 1859 until her death in 1951. After World War II, Lindenhurst became known as an agricultural center due to its production of hay and other vegetables. In 1957, all but two of the original buildings within town were destroyed by fire; however, Mayor Harry Jaffe rebuilt them using local materials within six months such that they reopened just three weeks later with a new Town Hall building which still stands today (the old Post Office also has been preserved). 0Since then, much progress has been made to improve education opportunities for its citizens including opening two high schools - North Country Academy (now South Country) and Lindenhurst Jr./Sr High School - as well as several small businesses like Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Catholic Schools which provides pre-school through eighth grade education for approximately 950 students per day across ten campuses throughout Westchester County (www.nlacalendar.org/DefaultDisplayItem?ItemNo=2247&CategoryNo=1&SearchType=All).
