Lindenhurst is a small town in the towns of Suffern and Dundalk, New York. The population was 1,624 at the 2010 census. Lindenhurst is located on the southern border of this area with Rockland County. It lies within the Adirondack Park. The first settler in Lindenhurst was George Washington Carver, who came to the village in 1872. Carver had come from Minnesota and started a farm near where he lived now. In 1881, David Burt bought land in what is now Lindenhurst from Nicholas Tichenor for $1,000. The town's first post office was established in 1886. In 1902, Memorial Day weekend, a large fire destroyed most of the original buildings in town - including Mr. Tichenor's old home - but not before destroying an orchard that supplied apples to many of the local homes. The apple orchard still stands today and has been leased to several businesses over time; its produce is currently available for purchase by visitors at one point during each year. Lindenhurst experienced some growth after World War II when many people left for work in Manhattan and elsewhere outside of New York State because of wartime shortages of housing and goods brought about by war production quotas set by Roosevelt's New Deal coalition government at that time. Growth continued into the 1960s as more people arrived here following moves away from rural communities throughout America due to technological advances that were making it easier to commute into cities like New York City and Bostoncombe had done before them (and which also helped spur new development around Lindenhurst). One result was increased traffic on Route 9A which ran through town – quickly becoming known as "the busy street" – leading up to Colgate University (now Emerson College) on Route 9B just east of town limits where students walked or took buses to campus proper every morning after class until late afternoon (the last stop being right next door where they would trade their textbooks for money earned on various job offers while studying). Lindenhurst is part of the Oneonta-albany-oneonta, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to what is now Lindenhurst were Dutchmen from Rotterdam who arrived in 1624 and started a farmstead on the present site of the town. The Dutch name for Lindenhurst was "Willemstadt". The first post office in Lindenhurst was established in 1798; it was renamed Longmeadow after General James Longstreet, who had recently been named Commandant of Ft. Washington during the American Revolution. In 1814, when Congress created upstate New York as part of theirompublic lands program, they gave land to each county within that area with one exception – Monroe County which received only 3 acres (1 km²). For some reason or another, this land never became developed and still sits undeveloped today on the northeast border of Monroe County. George Mason founded Verona Glass Works in nearby Oneonta in 1855 and soon began producing glass items such as windows and bottles for local restaurants and businesses. In 1881 he moved his factory to what is now known as Main Street where he continued making glass products until his death two years later. This event helped give birth to what is now known as Lindenhurst credit union which opened its doors on October 15th 1865 by order of Governor George Mifflin Bonello Jr.. It would remain open until 1971 when it merged with First Niagara Bank to form Oneonta Federal Savings & Loan Association (OFCA). Today Lindenhurst remains an agricultural center with various dairy farms supplying local markets with milk products while also providing employment opportunities for its farmers’ children. There are also a few small businesses dotting the landscape catering primarily to tourists looking for souvenirs or local attractions not easily found elsewhere in Upstate New York
In 1814, the town of Lindenhurst was founded in what is now westernchester county, New York. At the time, it was one of the most rural areas in upstate New York. In 1835, a post office was established in Lindenhurst and remained open until it closed in 1965. The town's first school was built in 1838 and served students from both Lindenhurst and nearby Farmingdale. The first telephone line to be installed inLindenhurst was leased from Eastern Telephone Company in 1898. In 1904, the first ice cream store opened inLindenhurst. In 1915, an epidemic of typhoid fever killed dozens of people in Lindenhurst and surrounding villages. The town's only hospital was built on Long Island Sound to provide treatment for the sick. In 1922, President Warren G Harding made his home here during his final year as president before leaving for Washington D.C.. The population of Lindenhurst peaked at around 10,000 during World War II due to wartime demand for housing and military installations within the area. However, by 1945, following the end of hostilities, Lindenhurst's population had decreased to about 590 residents living primarily within its boundaries (save for a handful of transient residents).
