The first settler in what is now Lindenhurst was Nicholas van der Hoorn who arrived in 1724 and built a cabin on the north side of present-day Main Street. In 1802, Abraham Lincoln's father, John Lincoln, bought land in section 8 of Lindenhurst and started a farm that would eventually produce over 100 head of cattle. The town's first store was founded by David Fenton in 1808. Lindenhurst became an incorporated village in 1865 and then an unincorporated community until it became an incorporated town on November 1, 1895. On May 30, 1902–the date that theodore Roosevelt married Alice Paul—the first time women had been allowed to vote in New York State— Lindenhurst had its only fire when three boys set a barn on Elmira Road on fire while playing with matches. The blaze destroyed most of the town center but not before many people had seen or experienced Roosevelt's wedding portrait from nearby Horseheads hill which still hangs today outside the old post office building across from the high school. In 1931–two years after President Franklin D. Roosevelt died—Lindenhurst had its first day of operation as a national emergency station with facilities for hospitalized President Franklin Daugherty as well as military members injured during World War II. Other such emergencies handled at Lindenhurg included numerous accidents along Route 9 (later called US 34) including two fatal car crashes; both took place near where Stony Point Park now stands; one caused by faulty construction while another resulted from defective street lights being installed early in 1932; both vehicles were driven off course and struck houses killing four people and injuring thirty nine others including five children as they walked to school each morning One significant event during these early days came about when Wendell Willkie won his primary race against Republican Congressman Clifford Wade – one of just two occasions during FDR's presidency where no African American candidates received elected office . When Willkie came into office he tasked local officials to develop plans to move all black citizens living within ½ mile (1 km) of Buffalo Bayou detention camp away from their homes so they might be removed if necessary due to racial discrimination charges brought against Dallas Parks –

In 1714, George Washington visited Lindenhurst while on his way from Albany to Boston and called it "a very pretty Village". In 1821, John Hylan founded the town of Rome in Livingston County and named it after his home village in Ireland which he had left behind when he moved westward with his family in 1815.Lindenhurst became a station on the Albany Railroad in 1838 and soon afterward developed into one of its most important towns because its location made it an ideal stopover point for travelers on railroads travelling between Buffalo and Rochester.
