Lindenhurst is a small town in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. Lindenhurst is located on Long Island Sound and bordered by the towns of Hempstead to the north, North Babylon to the east, Babylon to the south and West Babylon to the west. The first permanent settler in what would become Lindenhurst was Nicholas de l'Isle who arrived in 1664 from England. He built a trading post on an island in Long Island Sound which he named Islip after his family's home town of Islesworth on England's Isle of Wight. In 1775, during King George III's American Revolution, General James Longstreet marched through Lindenhurst with his 11th Massachusetts Regiment as part of his ill-fated Invasion of New York campaign. In 1815 John Auld purchased land at present-day 161 Main Street for $4 per acre (the current site). He erected a sawmill and gristmill on what later became known as "Auld Mill Road". The Village of Lindenhurst was chartered in 1853; it included all present-day Lindenhurst Township plus portions of neighbouring townships including Hempstead and North Babylon. The first schoolhouse was built in 1853; it burned down in 1865 but was replaced by a new one that still stands today. In 1860 Anthony Jardine opened up a grocery store at 142 Elmira Road which would become one of the largest stores on Long Island until closed by Jardine's heirs in 1978. From 1870 to 1880 John Pappan ran a bakery at 5 Main Street which became well known for its cinnamon rolls and other bread products until it closed also around 1980. In 1905 Isaac Saperstein operated a creamery at 4 Main Street until 1918 when he sold it to Julius Rosenwald who operates it now as Rosenwald Creamery Inc.. Mr Rosenberg also founded Grosse Pointe Farms East Farmingdale NY before selling it off and moving back to New York City where he died in 1992; however Grosse Pointe Farms remains operational as an agricultural research center near Rochester Utica, New York today with some 3 million acres (10% thereof) irrigated). In 1902, the first electric light had been installed in Lindenhurst and by 1907 there were five businesses in the community including a grocery store and post office. By 1920 there were ten businesses and three churches in Lindenhurt
