Lindenhurst is a small village in Orange County, New York, United States. The population was 3,694 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Syracuse–Waterville–Albany Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lindenhurst is about 12 miles (19 km) south-southeast of Syracuse and 16 miles (27 km) north-northwest of Waterville. The first settler in what is now Lindenhurst was Peter DeSantis, who arrived in 1795. He named his new community after the town he had just left, de Santisville. By 1807, there were eleven families living in Lindenhurst. The first post office was established in 1809; it was called "Newburgh". In 1814, David Levy moved to Lindenhurst from Sayretown and opened a general store on Main Street. In 1824, John Lacey built a house on Mill Pond Road which became known as "Lacey's Grove". A sawmill operated by Nicholas Fenton began operating in 1828; it continued until 1840. A gristmill started operations in 1830; it continued until 1862. A brickyard and dry goods store were also established between 1830 and 1840 by Isaac Howe; they continued until 1865 when they were converted into an hotel. Another early business establishment was the blacksmith shop which operated from about 1830 to 1870 by Jno Sprague Sr.; it continued until 1861 when it became another hotel! In1881, Uhrich & Co., druggists opened a business on Third Street west of present day Washington Avenue; this business failed within two years due to competition from Sears Roebuck & Co.. In 1895 Gertrude Swanson founded Swanson's Bakery on Front Street east of Second Avenue where today's Post Office stands - Swanson's Bakery remains one of the oldest commercial enterprises located withinLindenhurst limits today! In 1907 Drury Hinton organized his own farm with land located northeast of Main Street just south of what would become the current Village Hall building - this farm would later become known as "Hinton's Farm" or simply "Hinton." Drury Hinton served as village president for many years before leaving office for health reasons in 1965. Mrs.(??) Hinton took over leadership duties during her husband's illness before he passed away in 1970 - Mrs.(??) Hinton remained village president through much of the late 1990s and into 2000s while her son ran the Village Hall operation concurrent with being elected Mayor pro tempore! In recent years Mrs.(??) HINTON has retired from fulltime village governance but continues to provide support to her son throughout their time together as Mayor pro tempore! Lindenhurst is a small village in Westchester County, New York, United States. It was first settled in 1786 and became a town in 1836. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. Lindenhurst is located on the border of the towns of White Plains and Great Neck. The Village of Lindenhurst was chartered on April 15, 1786 by order of the New York State Legislature as a part of the Town of White Plains. The original grantees were John Wyman and his wife Mary Ann Wyman, both natives of England; Nicholas Gage, a native of Massachusetts who had emigrated to America; George Clinton (then Lieutenant Governor), one of the young men who had arrived with Commodore Anthony Wayne during that year's successful expedition against Gibraltar; and Jeremiah Greenleaf, an Englishman born in Kingston-upon-Hull who had come to this country two years earlier as agent for James Moore & Company. Lindenhurst developed rapidly after its incorporation as a town. By 1800 it boasted a tavern, three stores and about fifty residents. In 1836 Lindenhurst became fully incorporated as a village under the name "Lindenhurst". The growth of industry eventually led to development around Commercial Road which bisected village limits until it was truncated near present day Hwy 207 bygrowth 7 miles eastward in what is now Great Neck Township. This later opened up opportunities for farming northward into New York City proper whileIndustry centered around Commercial Drive southward into White Plains created single family dwellings which blended seamlessly into their surroundings over time becoming proverbial "homespun" Americana only distinguishable through modern means like satellite imagery or Google Earth
Lindenhurst is located in Westchester County, New York. The community was one of the original settlements on the western border of New York City. Lindenhurst became a village in 1836 and was chartered as a town in 1867. The population of Lindenhurst peaked at over 1,500 in 1920 and declined to less than 100 by 1940. Lindenhurst was annexed by the city of Yonkers in 1951 and has since suffered significant decline, reaching its current population of only 50 residents in 2016.
