The area was first settled by Germans in 1813, when they arrived from Preussen as refugees during the Napoleonic Wars. In 1845, James Wirt settler John Prentice built a cabin on what is now Main Street near what are now Second and Third Streets. This became an important center for trade and industry in early Lindenhurst; it had a post office, store, blacksmith shop and school until1868 when it merged with neighboring village of Tonawanda to form the new town of Lindenhurst. The first post office opened in 1868; it was renamed "Lindenhurst" after Jens Christian Lindenhard who donated land for the village square (now known as Park Avenue). From 1870 through 1925, two churches operated out of Lindenhurst: First Congregationalist (later Protestant) Church from 1870-75 and St Paul's Episcopal Church from 1905-25. Lindenhurst's growth slowed down during World War II because so many people were drafted or sent away to fight in Europe that no one wanted to move away - except for a few families who left behind their homes and farms just long enough to plant corn crops before returning home again during wartime rationing practices which lasted until 1945. Afterward, Lindenhurst slowly leveled off with only slight growth until 2000 when there was again rapid growth due to increased commuting within Buffalo–Niagara Falls due to technological advances such as cell phone service and internet access which has led to more businesses moving into the area including restaurants, tech companies and other professional services

Lindenhurst, also known as The Village and then Lindenhurst Beach, was a small town in the towns of Wayne and Monroe in Rockland County, New York, United States. It is now a ghost town. Lindenhurst was first settled in 1795 by German immigrants who named it "Lindenwurth". In 1801 the town became part of Wayne Township. In 1814 it became part of Monroe Township. A post office was established at Lindenhurst in 1821, and remained in operation until 1865. At its peak the population of Lindenhurst was around 100 people. However, by 1875 the population had decreased to about 30 people and it ceased to exist as an incorporated community. In 1900-1902 a group of investors founded what is now Oneonta which included land that later became Lindenhurst beach (now known as Eastern Point). The village site sat on a peninsula formed by two large bays - one on the south side of Long Island Sound and one on the north side - with spacious inland areas that would be developed for housing, shops, businesses and other uses. This settlement attracted colonists from Germany who were looking for land west of New York City where they could raise crops or build homes without interference from local officials or religious groups who controlled access to tracts of land east of the Hudson River. The first store opened in 1902 on Main Street between Eighth Avenue and Tenth Avenue; other early businesses included a bakery (1899), bootblack shop (1898) and grocery store (1901). By 1905 there had been erected three churches: St Andrew's Episcopal Church on Main Street between Eighth Avenue and Tenth Avenue; First Baptist Church at Seventh Avenue between Second Street and Third Street; Presbyterian church at Fourth Street between Seventh Avenue and Ninth avenue. The primary economic activity during this time period centered around fishing, whaling/sailing activities off Long Island Sound or along its western shoreline, trade with surrounding countries such as Russia (the largest market for American seafood), light industry such as manufacturing products like textiles or shoes from New England through eastern Canada to Mexico City, dairy production including cheese making from raw milk provided by farmers nearby or processing fruit concentrate imported from Europe into blocks suitable for baking into loaves or pies
Lindenhurst was first settled in 1824 by Major General Daniel Linden and his family. The community was renamed Lindenhurst after Colonel John P. Linden, a Revolutionary War veteran and member of the New York State Legislature. It grew rapidly during the nineteenth century as a result of its strategic location between Buffalo and Albany. In 1872, Lindenhurst received its own post office, which lasted until 1925. The community experienced a resurgence in popularity in the early twenty-first century due to its proximity to New York City and its potential for twinning with other cities throughout North America.
