The first settlers in Lindenhurst were Dutchmen who arrived there in 1676. They named the place "Dorp" after their leader, Cornelius Doerp. The first post office was established in 1792 and was called "Woudorf". In 1821, the name was changed to "Lindenhurst". In 1868, a sawmill and gristmill were built on White Sands Creek by John Cramer and his son-in-law David Montgomery. These mills produced flour for local markets as well as logs for building construction. The mills closed around 1910 but some parts of them are still standing today. Lindenhurst has a rich history that includes two world wars and many significant events including the Battle of Gettysburg which took place there on July 1, 1863. On July 3rd 1865, General Ulysses S Grant issued an order awarding Medals of Honor to more than 50 soldiers from Lindenhurst who helped repel Confederate troops during the battle known as "the Farm Fight." The community experienced another major event when it welcomed over 1 million people for its summertime season celebration known as America's Cup Day on September 12th 1970 which featured races and boat shows across three days throughout town along with concerts by Crosby Stills & Nash and Neil Young .

Lindenhurst is part of the Morristown–Newburgh–Bethlehem, NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Lindenhurst was Elias Hinton who arrived in 1795. He and his family were the first to purchase land east of Princeton Lake from the French Canadians. In 1814, Jonas Sollers bought 2,000 acres (800 hectares) of land east of Princeton Lake from Nicholas Bicknell for $5 per acre. This land would be known as "Sollers Hill". In 1824 or 1830 John Giannini purchased 1/2 mile (1 kilometer) south of present-day Lindenhurst from Nicholas Bicknell for $5 per year's remission on his £100 bond with this community. Giannini named his tract "Giannini's Prairie" after Giovanni Antonio Giani, an Italian immigrant who had come to America several years earlier and established himself near Philadelphia. In 1827, Ebenezer Wiseman acquired 400 acres (160 hectares), including present-day Lindenhurst Township and a large piece of adjoining territory called Easton Patent (now Monmouth County). Wiseman moved more than 500 people to this new land which he had purchased from Nicholas Bicknell less than two weeks after its acquisition by him from Giannini. These pioneer settlers built log cabins and cleared forests for their farming operations; they also created a small town that eventually became one of Hunterdon County’s most important communities – one that still exists today as part of the Morristown-Newburgh-Bethlehem metropolitan area! The early days at Lindenhurst were challenging but rewarding: settlement proceeded slowly due to difficulties obtaining water rights necessary for farming purposes; however, through hard work and determination these farmers progressed over time until today’s townsites stand testament to their perseverance! Today’s residents are proud members of our community who have worked tirelessly over many years to maintain its character and traditions while also expanding opportunities for all within its boundaries!
