The town was first settled in 1792 by Loyalists who fled to Lancaster after the British executed their king and government. The name "Lancaster" comes from General John Lancaster's Battle of Bunker Hill which took place on April 19, 1775 near present-day Albany. In 1809, the town was bought by Nicholas Cornell and developed as a shipping point for corn and other goods coming down the Hudson River valley. In 1823, Lancaster became an incorporated village under the name of Utica. In 1825, a post office was established in Lancaster with Alfred Fenton as its first clerk. The town experienced rapid growth during the mid-19th century thanks to its location on the main transportation corridor between Syracuse and New York City; it also benefited from numerous agricultural improvements made by local farmers including canals and roads. By 1870, when data were compiled for this report, Lancaster had reached a population of 486 people. During World War II (1939-1945), Patton's Third Army massed around ninety thousand troops in central New York adjacent to Utica while they waited for allied bombers to bomb German targets deep inside occupied Europe; during this time Lancaster played an important role as one of several freeways connecting up these strategic points across Greene County. As part of that strategy, many heavy trucks were brought into town for shipment through Canandaigua Lake before being unloaded on Mill Road just south of Interstate 86 exit 218B (in what is now Dunkirk). A new shopping center has been built in downtown Lancaster since 2006 called "Towne Center". This mall contains over 150 stores including Macy's and JCPenney as well as Sears and Kohl's department stores along with two movie theaters: Regal Cinema & Mall and AMC Lincoln Square Stadium 16 screens!

In 1798, Frenchman Antoine Mercier built one of the first true spotting scopes when he created an instrument called the Mercierscope. This instrument consisted of two mirrors that was placed behind a small aperture on top of which was placed an imageoscope or mirror device that allowed you to see through this aperture into whatever object you desired to observation
