In 1783, Congress passed a resolution proclaiming that "the capital or seat of government for this province [New York] should be at Lancaster." With this designation came increased growth and development throughout what would become Pennsylvania territory during the early 1800s due to natural resources such as coal and lumber which contributed heavily to economic development in northeastern Pennsylvania. In 1807, Lancaster became part of Erie County after it was split off from Pennsylvania due to western land acquisitions made during Andrew Jackson's presidency (known as Manifest Destiny). At first glance, this move may have seemed logical given that much agricultural production took place within Pennsylvania boundaries while east central Erie County housed most densely populated areas including Buffalo and cities such as Cleveland and Pittsburgh. However, many people felt that clustering geographically so close to Albany created too much competition for limited resources while also limiting opportunities for economic development outside eastern Pennsylvania proper - something which would continue until well into the 20th century despite ample suburbanization across northeastern Ohio/Indiana etc.). Lancaster, New York is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 5,715 at the 2010 census. Lancaster is one of the three towns in Erie County and it is part of the Buffalo-Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was first settled by Germans in 1795 and incorporated as a village on February 14, 1825. The town was named for General George Washington's army encampment near what is now Lancaster Court House Square. Lancaster began to grow rapidly after being designated as the county seat of Erie County on April 12, 1830. The new courthouse was built in 1836 on State Street between Main and Washington Streets. In 1850 the name of the town was changed to Lancaster when it annexed the neighboring village of Delaware Heights. On May 4, 1860 all but two residents of Lancaster voted to secede from Erie County due to disagreement over a new election law which gave voting rights only to citizens who had lived in the township for five years or more at the time of their last census appearance. In 1863–64 Union general William Tecumseh Sherman visited Lancaster while campaigning against slavery in central America and ordered his troops not to stop at any checkpoint without giving advance warning to local farmers so they could provide food for their soldiers' horses and mules. As a result many farms were burned down during Sherman's raid that summer). After Sherman's departure most inhabitants returned to their pre-war lives although some persistent anti-slavery activity continued until 1865 when both houses of Congress passed legislation abolishing slavery throughout America (including New York) with exceptions for those states that already had such laws in place). Lancaster experienced heavy manufacturing during World War II with plants like GE Aviation Manufacturing Company building fighter jets, tanks, warships and other military equipment; however much industrial production stopped afterward because wartime production requirements increased faster than available resources could be met; this led to increased unemployment among locals during postwar decades despite efforts by successive administrations including Clinton et al.)
