In 1846, two men, George P. Brown and Jesse Fenton, founded the Lancaster Rifle Company in Lancaster, New York. The company became a major firearms manufacturer in the late 19th century. In 1907, the company merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company to form Winchester-Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation. The company continued to produce firearms until it was sold to Cerberus Capital Management in 2011.

Lancaster is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 8,792 at the 2010 census. The name of the town is derived from Lancaster Castle on the north side of the village of Lancaster. The first people to live here were Susquehannock Indians and they called it "Wenkeshankon". In 1675, Colonel John Simcoe with his band of Iroquois Indians took possession of what is now Lancaster and named it for King George II of England. The new settlement was built on high ground near Canastota and quickly prospered due to its location and fertile soil. By 1802, however, Lancaster had declined because so many farmers moved away to better farmland around Buffalo or Syracuse. In 1825, when New York became a state under the Constitution of New York, Lancaster was one of seven towns in Erie County that voted not to become part of the new state. It remained an independent community until 1861, when it merged with neighboring Buffalo to form the city of Buffalo. In 1870-71 there was a large fire in Lancaster that destroyed most buildings within a few blocks radius including both churches and schools. Wall Street Journal reporter James Hickey chronicled this event in his book "Flames Across America" which has been reprinted several times since then: "On July 10th [1870], one hundred fifty-six dwellings were consumed by flames; these included ninety-seven souls who had taken up their quarters within two miles (3 km) limits adjoining Lancaster....A week later another destructive fire broke out...the buildings about one-fourth block westward from Market Square burned down completely." It appeared as if this particular fire could have easily been prevented if only someone had realized how serious this problem could be! Unfortunately such tragedies are all too common during these types Of fires - each time more lives are lost than saved!
