The townspeople voted to remove themselves from Erie Canal Zone on December 5, 1846, after being denied a vote on whether they should remain within the zone or leave altogether. They were replaced by dairy farmers from Canandaigua who had been relocated there from Syracuse two years earlier. Lancaster was incorporated as a town on May 14, 1858; it was renamed for General John Lancaster (1755-1824), an American general who fought in the Mexican War and later served as Mayor of Buffalo, New York (1821-28). After serving as U.S. Congressman from Buffalo from 1830 to 1837 and again from 1840 to 1845 (the last term being filled by his son John), General John Lancastrian moved back to Ohio where he died in office in 1824 at age 63 years old. The name "Lancaster" derives originally from Old English lanccor meaning "to lead", given that early European settlers thought that this particular river valley might be rich with coal reserves which could be tapped for energy production purposes - something which still remains an ideal destination today for those seeking such a find despite so many other possibilities available to them during their time there! However, during the late 1800s and early 1900s, Lancaster experienced declines in population and economic activity. In 1907, Lancaster was annexed by Buffalo, New York.
