Lancaster, New York is a small town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 3,031 at the 2010 census. Lancaster's history dates back to 1795 when it was part of the Albany District of the old New York State government. In 1814, Lancaster became an incorporated village and in 1834 it became a town. On July 10, 1860, Lancaster was merged into the newly formed Syracuse-Democrat Town Government and on January 1, 1861, its name changed to Lancaster City. The city boundaries have not changed since then. One of the earliest gunsights in Lancaster was an iron crosshair sight patented by Nicholas-Jacques Conte on November 7th 1795 and built by George Heydenfeldt for use with his rifle at White Sands Park near Auburn Hills, Michigan. It consisted of two iron circles with a white line passing through them which could be aimed vertically or horizontally providing sighting information to the shooter of either gun using any position within range (limited only to around 100 yards). This type of sight remained in use for many years until replaced by more advanced design several years later The first true automatic firearms were developed in America during World War I when inventors such as John Browning and Harry Ruger developed their own designs which utilized electric power to fire rounds instead of traditional cannons or pistols. Lancaster’s current location at its confluence with two rivers makes it ideal for water milling which began operations here in 1794. The mills were abandoned in 1957 but have been restored and operate today as part of the Erie Canal Museum & Heritage Center. Additionally, Lancaster’s rich history includes several churches including First Baptist Church (founded 1784), Christ Episcopal Church (1792), Presbyterian Church (1813), Methodist Episcopal Church (1854), Lutheran Evangelical Synod Chapel(1910) and United Brethren Churches–Baptist/Methodist/Congregational/Catholic Pastorium(1930).
