Lancaster, New York is a small town located in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. It was founded in 1824 by George Lancaster and his wife Catharine. The Lancaster name comes from the Lancaster family of England who first settled in this area. In 1825, George built a cabin on the river near what is now downtown Lancaster. He named it "The Hermitage." The Lancaster name stuck and the city was originally called "Lancasterburgh." In 1828, George's son Benjamin purchased land east of downtown and renamed it "The Square". In 1829, he added the word "New" to its name to distinguish it from Lancasterburgh which had been previously known as Northampton. His grandson John renamed it "Lancaster" after his father's birthplace in England. Today, there are over 100 buildings in downtown Lancaster including many Federal Government buildings dating back to 1790 such as the old Continental Congress building and First United Methodist Church which was also built during this time. The population of Lancaster was only 2,500 when it became an incorporated town in 1834 but today has grown to over 20,000 with several hundred businesses located within its borders! One of the earliest businesses in Lancaster was a blacksmith shop which opened its doors on Main Street in 1830. This shop became one of the largest commercial enterprises in town and still operates today under different names including American Metal Works Inc., Great Eastern Forge Shop & Supply Co., Blacksmiths' Hall & Proprietorship and present day Great Eastern Iron Works Incorporated. Many other businesses were established during this time including a druggist store (1835), a post office (1836), two hotels (1838-39), four stores (1840-41), two livery stables (1842) and two schools(1843). The first school opened at 8th Street and Broadway while later schools included both public schools (6th through 12th Streets) as well as private academies for girls (16th Street) until they were discontinued around 1870 due to lack of enrollment! Many important events occurred during these years including: in 1840-41; prominent citizens such as Judge Elijah Howe donated land for a courthouse that would serve as central business district for both township government services and general court proceedings; in 1847; official incorporation took place with John Dickson serving as Township Clerk for nearly fifty years until his retirement at age seventy-eight; in 1861; General Ulysses S Grant visited local residents at The Hermitage Hotel where he gave speeches critiquing slavery before visiting Union forces stationed nearby at Fort Erie; in 1865-66; Battle of Gettysburg resulted in displacement of thousands of people followed by Reconstruction Period throughout much northeastern USA ensuing with increasing violence against ethnic minorities across Northeastern America resulting into decades long period known euphemistically call 'the Jim Crow Era'; and finally...on December 5, 1984,...John Dickson died suddenly after many years service to township government
