In 1860-61 an act to create two school districts within Erie County failed because only one community voted in favor - Lancaster - but it wasn't until 1870 that all five settlements within what would become Lancaster came together to form what is now known as "Lancaster School District No." 1". That year also saw the opening of Lancaster's first store - John Goss's store - followed by others over time until present day. The discovery of oil rigs near Canandaigua during World War II led to an increase in business for local businesses including those that operated restaurants such as Red Lobster along with other services such as mechanics shop ditto across Route 518 from downtown to Canandaigua Springs where soldiers could take their vehicles for repair or maintenance while stationed nearby at Camp Upton or elsewhere outside military camps during the war years; later these establishments became known as "Rochester" bars after Rochester IN due to their similarity (ongereously) theretoat any given moment during Prohibition (the legal drinking age then being 21).
