Lancaster, New York is a small town in the Hudson Valley region of New York State. The population was 7,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Oneida County town of Lancaster. The name Lancaster comes from two Dutch settlers, Hendrick van der Linden and his family, who called themselves "Lancaster" because they had located their farm there in 1689 after moving from Rotterdam. The first settlement was on an agricultural island in the river near present-day Elizabethtown. In 1795, John Armstrong founded Armstrong's Mills on what is now Main Street in Lancaster and named it for his father-in-law James Armstrong (1748–1828), one of the original incorporators of Catskill Districts within Ulster County. Lancaster became a village in 1814 when it joined with other towns in Ulster County to form the new Town of Utica. However, as Utica grew increasingly prosperous, it decided to secede from Utica County and become an independent city in 1847. When the state acquired all of New York by annexing it into its newly created state in 1862, Utica reincorporated as a village again but this time with only 1%, or about 10 people, voting for president; this effectively ended its status as an independent city and made Lancaster the seat of government for all rural Oneida Countyexcept for Glens Falls which retained its separate government until 1898. After being abandoned by most farmers during World War II due to lack of food production capacity due to strategic bombing raids over Germany (the town had been bombed twice), Lancaster began to be revived as a bedroom community thanks to education initiatives spearheaded by Mayor Arthur Schieffer (1936–2007). By 1990, nearly half a million people lived here – making Lancaster one of America’s fastest-growing small towns – and manufacturing jobs have since returned although wages remain low relative to those found elsewhere in New York State.
