In 1863 Major General Augustus Holmes founded Holmes Oil Field near present day Westmoreland and about two miles west-northwest of downtown Lancaster; this field became world famous for its production from 1901 until its closure due to environmental concerns in 1984). This area continues to produce shale gas which can be found under roads and pipelines around town today

Afterward he returned to Lancaster where he lived for several years before dying in1865 at age 72 years old from pneumonia contracted while camping out near Gettysburg Battlefield。 A year later, on October 3rd 1861, Abraham Lincoln became America’s new president when he was elected via re-election over Stephen Douglas who had been running as an independent candidate under pressure from Northern Republicans following Lincoln’s successful reelection campaign five weeks earlier that year against Andrew Johnson
