The first binoculars were invented in 1795 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. The modern day binocular is a product of the 18th century. In 1795, Nicholas-Jacques Conte developed a 2-inch (50mm) telescope with a convex mirror and an eyepiece to improve seeing between objects at different distances. He called his new instrument, the conical or oculi Telescopii de la Commission des Orateurs français de sondage (Commission on French Surveying Instruments). In 1800, Pierre Simon Laplace improved upon Conte’s design and created the vernier telescope which permitted magnification up to 12x. However, it was not until 1802 that John Herschel produced what is thought to be the world’s first true binocular which he named “Herschelian Binoculars” after British astronomer John Herschel who had made some early observations of stars using these instruments.
Lancaster is a town in Erie County, New York, United States. The population was 7,912 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Erie County and the largest community in the town. Lancaster is one of five towns in Erie County that are not incorporated as municipalities. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lancaster were traders from Holland who came through the area in 1614 on their way to Albany, New York. The first permanent settler was Nicholas Amick who built a cabin on the east side of Buffalo Creek in 1792. In 1807, John Morse moved from Scranton to purchase land near present-day Lancaster and began construction on his gristmill which became known as "Morse's Mill". In 1825, he donated 4 percent of his mill property for public school purposes and named it Lancaster High School after himself and his wife Eliza (Dorothy) Morse. In 1853, James Prentice founded an agricultural society with land aroundpresent-day Lancaster along Buffalo Creek for experimental farming purposes; this later became State University of New York at Binghamton. In 1860 John Sweeny bought lands northeast of present-day Lancaster from Samuel Hance for $15 per acre; these lands served as part of the Township of Clinton until it was disbanded by Act No. 2 of 1909 when township status was transferred to Lancaster village Lancaster Village Development Agency Incorporated On January 1st 2009 The history and development of this small village can be traced back over 100 years starting with its incorporation into a borough by act no 2of 1909 It has grown steadily ever since becoming home to some of western NY’s most vibrant neighborhoods such as Balfour Park & Overlook (just north), Midtown East (between Second Avenue & Third Street), South SideWest (southwest corner lot between Main Street & Linden Boulevard), Dutch Elm Place (east side lot between First Avenue & Fourth Street).Today there are over 350 businesses located within just a few blocks radius making it easily accessible both inside and outside Of Town
