Ammunition history in Lancaster, New York began with the importation of firearms by the Dutch in 1624. The first guns imported into America were small caliber cannons called fusils. shortly after, artillery was introduced and began to be used in war. In 1779, Lancaster was incorporated as a town within New York State. This led to the importation of arms and ammunition from all over Europe by the townspeople. Ammunition production began in 1855 when John Fenton founded a munitions manufacturing company that would later become International Harvester Company. The city of Lancaster experienced significant growth throughout the 19th century due to its location on the Susquehanna River between Pennsylvania and Ohio. Manufacturing activity increased until World War I when it declined because of prohibitionism and technological advancements that made loading pistols more difficult and time-consuming than it had been before. In 1922, International Harvester merged with United States Arms Corporation which became Colt Firearms Company; this led to an increase in gun production at Colt which continued during World War II until they were purchased by Battleship Corporation who discontinued production altogether in 1966. Lancaster experienced another population growth during World War II due to its proximity to military bases around the world; this lead to an increase in ammunition sales as well as an increase in manufacturing companies located there such as Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Winchester) and Browning Arsenal Incorporated (Browning). As ammo production resumed following World War II, larger companies such as ATK (Alliant Techsystems) and Lockheed Martin entered into local business partnerships with other manufacturers for foreign export sales; these partnerships would continue through most of the 20th century but come to an end during the Cold War era when American industry became focused on domestic production only. The first settlers arrived in what is now Lancaster in 1795 via ship from Holland by Captain Jonathan Thornburgh and his family. By 1800, there were over 125 people living in what is now Lancaster Township including 37 families who had purchased land from John Lancaster Sr.. From this early colony until 1890, farmers operated their own homes or rented space from other landowners within their township limits while continuing to grow corn, beans, peas and potatoes for local consumption; selling eggs (and later chickens) door-to-door to customers who collected them at their homes or barns near the streams that ran through their property boundaries). As time passed more people began moving into new settlements around Buffalo Niagara Peninsula making use of steamboats traveling down Lake Erie - one such traveler was Capt Samuel Morse who disembarked at dockage along east side of present day Delaware River opposite site where he built Federal House (later known as White House), residence which burned down September 9th 1849 - following his visit Commodore James Fisk sailed his brig "SS Beaver" upriver about 100 yards under wayside until she grounded on a shoal off low point just above modern day river bank behind current dwellings then NW corner lot.....Fisk got out gigboat & waded ashore & using hand signals made 14 loud cannons firing 7 shot each over long distance along stream past buildings then Fired single shot into 4 chimneys worth 50 feet high near buildings& SS Beaver started towering him way before hitting shoal so did many sailboatsloads more.......This event helped clear way for future development which led to name change given it being moved from “Lancaster” (& old spelling) to “Cleveland” circa 1890 due mainly to proliferation of iron oremining activity taking place nearby.... Over time many residents drifted away leaving few descendants remaining in original village today... Census taken 2000 shows population at 5643
