As of the census[2] of 2000, there were 2,521 people,[3] including 715 households out of which 36% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43% were married couples living together, 16% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30% were non-families. 24%of all households were made up of individuals and 10% had someone living alone who was 65 years old or older. The Village was incorporated in 1881 and became a city in 1911. The village was founded by Loyalist settlers on land that now forms the eastern border of Rochester. In 1881, the town of Geneva was enlarged to include Lake Grove and other villages within its boundaries. One year later, Geneva merged with Rochester to form a new city government. In 1911, the City of Rochester annexed the Village of Lake Grove as its own municipality. At that time, it had a population of 801 people. During World War II (1939-1945), Lake Grove became an important manufacturing center for artillery ammunition production due to its location near major military installations such as Fort George Gillett and Wright Field in Wrightstown and nearby Battle Creek Arsenal. Ammunition production continued through the war years although there were some large decreases in output due to wartime shortages elsewhere in America
