Lake Grove is a hamlet in the town of Lake Grove, New York, United States. It is located on the north bank of the Hudson River. The population was 376 at the 2000 census. The first settler in what is now Lake Grove was John D'Angelo, who arrived in 1792. The community was named for General James Wilkinson's estate in Vermont, which he bought and moved to its present location in 1807. D'Angelo's heirs continued to farm the land until it was purchases by George Washington in 1828 and sold to Alexander Hamilton for $8,000. Hamilton built a house on his lands as part of his ambitious plans for Twelfth Street between Fifth Avenue and Seventh Avenue NW (later renamed Madison Avenue). He also developed other properties nearby including Pinecrest and Hyde Park. One of Hamilton's sons-in-law founded the Masonic Lodge No. 3 Agrarian Society there in 1838 with three brothers – James Payson, Elijah Burt and Ebenezer Parsons – as charter members. In 1896, after years of development work by local boosters led by Mayor Augustus Herrick (1853-1920) along with donations from businessman Charles Fenton (1850-1935), Lake Grove became an incorporated village under New York State law. The name change came about because membership had outgrown the original village hall which sat on one main street throughout most of its history; instead, individual residents pooled their money to build newVillage Hall on Broome Road adjacent to First Presbyterian Church beginning in 1917 until it burned down in 1978 following a storm damage assessment that found no need for replacement due to improved lighting and air conditioning facilities available within Village Hall itself! As Village Hall slowly deteriorated over time due mostly to neglect and lack of funds from developers over time, vandalism began becoming more common especially among teenage boys who often caused extensive damage such as broken windowsills and smashed light fixtures inside while gainfully employed adults were left frustrated with little or no recourse other than calling police or writing letters expressing frustration! In response to this problem starting around 2003 an organized effort known as "Save Our Halls" emerged spearheaded by then Village Clerk/Treasurer Karen Doherty whose goal was “to provide donors/volunteers with resources needed but not always easy access” while working closely with her predecessor Lisa Juhlman who had also worked tirelessly behind the scenes providing much needed support both before she took office as well during her tenure! Eventually after many months worth of collective effort funded through private donations - many coming directly from individuals interested enough in helping keep our historic building functioning rather than just profit motives - Village Hall finally reopened Memorial Day weekend 2009 after five years off limits following numerous repairs including reopening all four sides OF THE DOOR AS WELL AS ADDING AN EXTENSIVE GAS STOVE TO PROVIDE HOT WATER FOR ALL!!
