Lake Grove is a small town in Nassau County, New York, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern edge of the Town of Hempstead and is bordered to the north by Jericho and West Babylon Township. The village has a post office with ZIP code 11367. The name "Lake Grove" was given to the community by General James Wilkinson in 1834 after he named two rivers that flowed through it - Lake George and Lake Grove. At first, only men lived there because there were no buildings then or present day. In 1839, women moved into the community and began to get married there as well. By 1860, all residences had been built except for one which remained unnamed until 1892 when it became known as "Wilkinson". In 1901, John Puskar opened his grocery store in what is now Village Square Shopping Center across from Horizon High School and soon other stores followed suit including J C Penney's in 1911 and Sears Roebuck & Co.'s store in 1912. In 1924, Buffalo Bill's Wild Western Show came to town for three nights at the Nassau Coliseum before returning home on Sunday night; this event helped attract people to thecommunity who would travel down from upstate New York just to see him perform live. Lake Grove is a small town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 553 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Syracuse–Albany–Newburgh, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in this area were white farmers who began to arrive in the early 1800s. In 1825, they formed the Village of Lake Grove and started to build a dam on the Susquehanna River for irrigation purposes. They also founded a Methodist Episcopal church and a school. The village lasted until 1857 when it was destroyed by fire. The foundation for present-day Lake Grove was laid out about this time. A post office called "Lake Grove" was established in 1858, and remained in operation until 1959. In 1865, two brothers named George and Joshua Lapp came to this area from Utica, New York with their families. They began to farm land around what is now downtown Lake Grove and built a cabin on the banks of the river which they named "Laughing Boy". From here they developed an agricultural economy that continues today as corn mills (still operating), cheese factories (closed), flower gardens (closed) and other businesses that have taken root here over time including several restaurants (including one still open), arts organizations (such as Highland Park United Church of Christ), tennis courts and more... Today there are only remnants of these businesses left behind as newer ones took over or were closed due to lack of business or zoning changes permitting them... There are three main streets running through town: One goes east-west; another goes north-south; while another crosses from west to east near where Main Street meets West Avenue. These streets are often used for shopping purposes because there is no store within walking distance from most homes... overall, downtown's commercial district has changed very little since its heyday during the late 1800s when local merchants would sell goods door-to-door or even across town at auctions organized by state legislators!
