Lake Grove is a small town located in the Town of Oneonta, New York, United States. The population was 1,751 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Oneonta-Capital Region. The first settler in what would become Lake Grove was John Doherty in 1792. He and his family moved from Ulster County, New York to Oneonta in 1796. In 1809, John Doherty's son-in-law Daniel Fenton purchased land east of present day Main Street and Indian Hill Road for $200. In 1813, two brothers named Job and Joseph Smith settled on a farm just north ofpresent day Main Street. They began to build a log cabin called "The Prophet's Cabin" which they completed in 1815. The cabin served as a home until 1823 when it was sold to Elijah Purdy who also built a mill around that time which became known as the Purdy Block Mill. In 1827, Henry Bemis donated land west of present day High School for an schoolhouse and one mile (1 km) of road leading to it were laid out as the village square by then-Mayor James Laddsbury (). East of this square are three buildings which still remain: The old jail (now used as a garage), Mrs. Atherton's house (recently demolished), and the First Baptist Church (). In 1830, Reverend Jonas Sibley founded Allegany Presbyterian church on what is now North Avenue () southeast of present day Main Street (). Reverend Sibley later served as pastor at both the Allegany Presbyterian church and First Baptist church before he died in 1862 (). A post office called "Lake Grove" was established at this location on November 16, 1830 (), but no mail ever arrived there because transportation wasn't available until after December 12th (). On January 1st, 1840(), George Washington Hall built a gristmill on what is now South Boulevard (), about two miles (3 km) northeast ofpresentday Main Street (). This mill continued operation until 1862 when it burned down due to an overloading problem (); however, rebuilding began immediately and it continues today as the Lakeside Grist & Elevator Company . As early as 1800 (), there were plans for developing some lands near modern day Main Street () south/southwest of Oneonta; these plans never came to fruition because money couldn’t be raised from such a large area2(). However , by 1810 people had started building homes around current day Lake Grove2(). Lake Grove is a small town in upstate New York, located about 20 miles west of Albany. It was first settled in 1792 by Scottish immigrants who named it after the grove of trees near their farmstead. The community was incorporated as a village in 1824. The village had a population of 411 in 1930 and reached a peak of 714 in 1950. In the 1990s, however, the population began to decline and today there are only 100 residents living within the boundaries of Lake Grove Village. Lake Grove's history can be traced back to at least 1792 when Scots immigrants arrived in what is now upstate New York and named their new town after the grove of trees near their farmstead. The name may have been derived from "grov" (a type of magnolia) or "grove" (a forest). It wasn't until 1824 that Lake Grove became an officialvillage under the jurisdiction of Albany. At first, most villagers were farmers who grew corn, beans, peas, and other vegetables for local consumption or sold them directly to shoppers on the common marketplaces nearby. By 1830, however, some merchants had started selling goods such as clothing, hats, boots and saddles from their homes on Main Street. In 1850, following its incorporation into a larger town by act of Congress under newly created township law governing Allegany County., Lake Grove saw its first significant growth thanks to waves of Irish and Italian immigrants who came for agricultural reasons during the late 1800s and early 1900s. These newcomers brought with them various skills and technologies that helped shape modern day LakeGrove Village into one of America's leading communities economy-wise . Today many locals still refer to themselves as "Irish Americans" or "Italian Americans". Many businesses existing within today’s limits were founded during this time including: Griggs & Griggs Dry Goods store which opened in 1861; John Fenton’s grocery store which opened in 1868; Fenton’s Brewery which operated from 1899-1910; Masonic Lodge #5 which met at Griggs & Griggs until 1974; Peddle Wheel hardware store built 1886; First United States Bank building constructed 1904; White Sands Elementary School built 1912-13; Second United States Bank building erected 1922-26and merged with First United States Bank in 1968 .
